Gnome Shell is still in development, but provides an early peek at what Gnome 3.0 will look and behave like. Thankfully, Gnome Shell is in the repositories if you are using the latest Ubuntu Karmic beta.
sudo aptitude install gnome-shell
Once installed, you will need to replace your current window manager with Gnome Shell. This can be done by pressing Alt + F2 to bring up the "Run Application" dialog. Enter the following:
gnome-shell --replace
If you like it and want to launch Gnome Shell on startup, add the above line into a new entry within the "Startup Applications" preferences application.
